Oh, and just for the record, I can't stand Metallica. First three albums were fine, and AJFA was decent, but everything after that is practically unlistenable to me (with the exception of a couple of songs here and there). In my humble opinion, there is nothing Metallica has done that Megadeth hasn't done better. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Another agree here from me. Kirk is a great guitarist no doubt, but Mustaine's talent is in another league on his own, specially on the songwriting department. Even in some riffs of Master you can still hear his style. And lyrically speaking Dave was way ahead of most thrash bands too. Dave's biggest problem seemed to be that he was living life in self-destruct mode.
But imo the thing that killed Metallica was the death of Cliff Burton. Honestly, i think things would have been a lot of different if Cliff was still around. Best bass player in Thrash ever and i know he was a huge influence on both Lars and James.
Now days Metallica to me turned into something like what happened to Kiss, where they seem to be more of a brand than really a band. The new sound they make seems way to generic for my tastes. Or perhaps i'm just getting old.

@thrussianboy, please don't mention Municipal Waste, they were absolutely terrible when i saw the live, my ears were on the verge of bleeding. But I didn't intend to go to see them, the only reason I did was because they were with other better bands, like Lamb of God, now they are an awesome thrash metal band. And i totally agree on the Metallica thing, after their first couple of albums they slowly began to fail, *. Anger for example.
Edit: My bad I just noticed I brought back a thread from a couple of weeks ago, sorry.

I agree that most of their latest albums were crap, but I think Death Magnetic was an exception. Shame the sound quality wasn't that great, though.
