Ball physics, controls! This just shows that EA never really cared about the game. I've heard of games being ported to PS3/360 consoles, but I've never seen wii games get ported onto the HD consoles. Is this disaster more embarrassing than 2K's debacle?

^^^I thought that they were supposed to be building a tennis game for 360/ps3. I didn't know it was going to have anything at all to do with the wii version. You're selling to two very different groups imho.
And no. Nothing compares to promising more players on the roster and more features via dlc, then canceling once the game has sold.

Yeah, what 2K did was tantamount to theft. With EA, and other companies, I fail to see the allure of motion controls. Are face buttons really that bad? Aren't videogames about relaxation? In truth, all one wants are games from the past with updated graphics and technology. There is a reason why people still play other games; they were fun. Modern games have forgotten what games are about--they are about fun and entertainment. Developers are getting too complicated in my opinion. To be fair, EA apparently was going to feature both face buttons and analog-swing mechanics. But in truth, players who use the swing motion tend to have an advantage.

I think the main problem is video game companies/developers don't truly understand the essense of the sport. The thing that irritated me the most was when I'd watch trailors for of developers speaking about other tennis video gmaes their knowledge was lacking, where the sport is concerned. When I see players speak about tennis where GST (Wii) is concerned, I get the same feeling.
What needs to be done, in my opinion, is get people who understand tennis, and people that understand tennis, and have a meeting of the minds, and see what common ground can be met. If either side is lacking, those who sufer will be the gamers. I hope EA doesn't rely on it's name, or like 2K (Top Spin Series) which new the had the market, so gave us sub par material, knowing there wasn't any major competition, so they could do their numbers.
When EA got into the tennis market, I was estatic. After seeing FIFA, Madden, MLB, NBA, NHL, Tiger Woods (PGA Tour), I thought.... finally!!!! My thinking was EA would look at it's predessors, and see what they did well, employ, that, and se what mistakes they made, and either rectify them, or omit them.
When I see things that were don in other EA sports titles (FIFA, Madden, MLB, NBA, NHL, Tiger Woods [PGA Tour]), and some of the things they were able to do, I though with tennis, this could be great, but EA has seemed to have missed the ball. I am not a video game developer, but am an avid sprts fan, and somewhat knowledgeable about video games. I don't want to chastise EA, because I don't know the ins and outs of making a video game, but it seem EA, or those involved with the making of GST are not fully versed in the sport of tennis.
I don't want to get into all the nuances, and things could could simulate real life, actual tennis, just yet (I will if EA wants), and rather focus on the basics. Get the most realistic gameplay as possible. Sometimes less is more, believe me. Over complicated controls an all that is more of a hinderance than a benefit. Any player, even in jniors, can pick up a racquet and hit a flat, slice or top spin shot. This should be basic. Like NHL tap for a wrist shot, hold for a slap shot. Madden, tap for lob pass, hold far a sharp(Laser) pass. Or NBA hold to shoot, release button to release the shot. Then 2K I believe had the halo press "X" to shoot, and halo appears above the ball. Red (bad shot), yellow(decent shot) and green (great high %), then tap again when the specified colour halo appears around he ball. The problem is you can't control when you want to release the shot, and waiting for the yellow/green halo, gave defenders too much time to block shots, and was unrealistic. The simple control was better, easier and more realistic. You just have to find the best realease point, usually at the apex of the jump.
In relation to tennis, powering up shots (like Top Spin Series & Smash Court 3 which followed TS), had you holding the button to power up the shot, and relaese the button, when you want your player to swing. The problem with this, and a mojor one at that is, it makes volleying almost obselete. Volleying is damn near ineffective. Not good at all for any tennis game!! Also if you want to hit a top spin shot, because you've powered that up, you can't change it. If you're on the run, you may want to slice it or hit a lob, but can't.
For the first installment of GST, EA should get the basics down, make a very good game, with solid, realistic gameplay and go from there in further installments of the franchise. I like DMT, but as great as it is there are too many aces (which most video games lack). But too much. Sampras, Becker and Roddick can hit 25-30 aces in 4-5 set matches, but Lendl, Federer should not be hitting 40-50 aces in a match. SC2 has some subtle things I'd change as well.
They (EA) said face buttons will be used as well as swing motions, and are delaying the game, so hopefully, some of these concerns which have been voiced, can be rectified.
EA, the market is open. Smash Court 3 dropped the ball, Viirtua Tennis is an arcade game, and Top Spin is so flawed (and they don't seem to be bothered with correcting it), but many are wondered that we';l be let down. Please... take heed.
