I have just posted this on the dead space forum..

Look closely to the top once you opened your holographic display with I J or L and then press I J or L again quickly to switch between diplays. you can actually see te LB and RB xbox buttons on the left and right hand side flash briefly on your screen .. When you see that the crash is immenent.

I dont mind a game being ported but gee whiz please do it properly then....eg. not to see xbox buttons on my PC screen.

I personally think we cant do anything to fix it. It is a bug/bad code.

EA needs to recode and come up with a hotfix or something. The dumb game is unplayable till then but damn it was good before the crap started......

Managed to stop the C++ crashes by removing my joystick and gamepad but the annoying stuttering still persists.

OK as some are reporting there seems to be a compatibility problem with some USB gamepads or joysticks. Unplug your joystick or game controller then play for a while and see. For me the C++ crashes have completely disappeared after removing my Logitech Rumblepad. For those of you who are using a controller to play you might have to use the mouse and keyboard and wait for a patch (hopefully).

However Vertical Sync doesn't seem to be working either in game or through my video card control panel\ nHancer and for sure anti-aliasing is not working. It makes me think this game is using a modified version of UE3 similar to Mass Effect. All the UE3 games have VSync issues as well as no direct AA control without messing with the configuration files. The engine (unfortunately) is designed for consoles and applies AA and Vsync on the fly, which blows for PC gamers with decent systems.

Damicles, you are da bomb!!!WOOT

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder 2. I disconnected it and walah...the C++ runtime errors are no more!!

Your solution should work for most people then.

Since it is ported it may not like any type of game controllers attached to your PC.

Its still a bug in the code and should be fixed in a patch.

@Damicles

What brand and model are your joystick and gamepad? By any chance are either of them Logitech? I have a RadioShack brand DualShock II Playstation 2 controller to USB adapter for my gamepad and it makes no difference whether that's plugged in or not. My mouse and Keyboard are both Logitech so I was curious if maybe there's a bug specific to that brand of hardware.

Also, after unplugging your peripherals, does your game still crash if you look directly at a save terminal (close enough that you're able to activate it) and then open your inventory screen? That is one of the ways I can get the game to give the run-time error 100% of the time.

I hope this information helps someone. In regards to the micosoft visual c++ error, make sure that you do not have a program installed that requires visual c++ 2005 and installs it or attemps to. A good example, win dvd 8, make sure it is not on your system. I also have discovered, that having a gamepad and a track ball installed on your system at the same time, will kick you out of the game, give you error messages, crash etc. A gamepad and a mouse might do the same thing. dead space used to kick out all the time in the options screen of the game, when i removed the gamepad and software, never had another problem. Hope this helps someone.

@Athanos

I have Logitech LX 700 cordless keyboard and a G9 mouse.

I dont think that the problem is brand specific...

I just disconnected my Sidewinder and I played now for 2 hours without any crashes.

Disconnect everything externally (unplug it phisically) from your PC except your keyboard and mouse, run it and see if it makes a difference

I also had the Microsoft Visual C++ errors. The Game crashed about all few minutes. After disconnecting my USB Joystick (Trustmaster TopGun), it was possible to finish the Game without any crashes!

OS Windows XP Prof. SP3

Good call, leakycube! Even though removing my GamePad alone did nothing, removing my 4 port USB hub fixed it. This seemed a bit odd to me until I realized that the hub made 4 generic HID gamepad entries in the Game Controllers window that remained even AFTER unplugging my actual gamepad! So to anyone who is still crashing even after removing their gamepads / joysticks, check to see if there are still entries i the Game Controllers window.

Now it's time to go play, finally!

just a quick thought, how do you think we could go about getting this fix added to the official pc troubleshooting thread?

I also disconected Microsoft Sidewinder Precission 2 Joystick yesterday that I have on Win XP SP2. I then managed to finish two chapters and no crashes occured. Seems that it is connected with game controlers.
