ok wait so we dont want punching from the guard, overhand punches, flaring punches, and hookercuts?
we want just want the old stuff back?
imo you guys wanted FNR4.5 instead of fight night champion
and round 3 was fun, but barely represented real boxing

The parry a shot come back with a big hook etc.. worked well.
However:
"Now, it feels less like a simulation of the sweet science and more of a chaotic struggle to see who can land counterpunches."
That IS boxing ^
Hit and don't get hit!
Or get hit and hit back harder!
Now it feels more like real boxing - it is a simulation i feel.
Boxing is madness and you have to think fast - glad they have speeded it up.
I was wondering if anyone would call me out on this line. I agree that FNR3 would've been better if it played faster. No disagreement there.
What I don't like about FN4 / FNC is that the punching and movement was supposedly changed simply to give players more thorough control of the fight. There are more ways to hit or avoid being hit. If implemented well, these additions make the game better. If done poorly, then you end up with boxers stepping into a KO punch when the input was a weave under the punch. Sometimes, adding fluff just because you can equates to Tyson missing a wild overhand instead of landing a calculated straight right.
I agree that real-life boxing is wild and unpredictable - a common element in sports that makes it exciting to watch or play. The challenge of sports video games is to deliver as much of the real aspects of the sport while still giving the player full control to do any action at the push of a button. If I'm in range and flick the stick to the right, for example, I fully expect my boxer to throw and land a right hook to the face. With FN4/FNC, god bless realtime physics, but seeing my boxer over-throw the punch and cradle his opponent's head in the crook of his elbow fails to add value to the game. Actually, it has the opposite effect. Sure it's real - it happens all the time in real boxing - but how does missing the punch make it more fun for me, the gamer? That said, a second punch thrown from the same distance finds the mark.
What?
This is another point I'm trying to make. Real boxing is rife with uncertainty and random chance. The role of video games, though, is to translate the real and glorious parts of the sport while putting control in the gamer's hands (ie. minimizing random chance). I'm all for a fierce inside exchange and one boxer gets caught and goes to sleep. What I'm complaining about is how little feel there is to these exchanges. I'm diligent: I'm trying to pick up on what makes other players successful in my matches with them. Still though, I can't figure out why I miss 90% of my uppercuts, or why my weaves with Tyson are always stopped short. I refuse to accept that I could be so proficient at FNR3 and so helpless when it comes to the sequels. It's not like I'm jumping from Doom to Call of Duty... I could log on to FNR3 right now and tool a few people no problem. Something is wrong with the direction of the game when I lose almost every fight and feel like secrets to the gameplay are being kept from me.
After all the tweaks made since FNR3, I feel as if the gameplay is more madness than science. Ironic, seeing as the intention of the newer features is to give more control to the gamer.

all those punching options are great additions to the game. But are they necessary? Do they add value to the gameplay experience? Maybe for some. I'll tell you what they do accomplish for everyone: mapping different punches within 15 degrees of each other on the right analog stick.
you got it wrong: what I wanted was a REAL fight night 4, the one that was supposed to build off what made fight night 3 great while discarding what made fight night 3 weak. TPC made it a classic. The balance between offense, defense and movement was great. Want to speed things up? Go for it. Punch, block, weave, and step faster - I'm all for it. Improved game modes and graphics? Sure. FNC, then, should be the best parts of FN3 and 4. I don't care what anyone says, that is always how video game series have been developed and that's why I cry foul on the series I have loved and come to hold to the highest standard.
Again, great video games are supposed to be FUN first, real second. In it's day, WCW Nitro on PS1 looked real as hell but it was the biggest pile of sh-t because the controls sucked. Look at infinity blade on iphone/ipad. Supremely addictive, but when you think about it: what self-respecting swordsman growls before every strike and only swings in pattern? No one cares because the game is fantastic.
FNR3 may have lacked the frenzied inside exchanges of real boxing, but it got a lot of other things bang on. More importantly, the actions resulting from the gamer's input were reliable. That's what makes games like this fun: you can control someone to do something reliably. You're supposed to be able to do whatever you want to do, intuitively and without any doubt that chance could nullify your actions. I don't care for all the weird, random things that COULD happen in a fight. Bottom line is that the gamer should be confident that s/he is in control at all times, regardless if s/he is winning or losing the fight.

Fight Night Round 3 was the best - and remains the best - title in the Fight Night franchise. I know some of you will tell me to quit living the past, but this is the truth. Years after its release, I still play FNR3 on a regular basis and enjoy it as much as the day I bought it. That's more than 4 years after it came out. Judging by the contents of Pre-Owned bin at my local EB Games, I know the same can't be said about FN4 in 2013. Since FNC is pretty well FN4 Part 2, the same complaints apply.
I was excited for the release of FN4: great graphics, expanded roster, deeper career mode, etc... but was sorely disappointed by the overhaul of the core gameplay mechanics. I sold the game back to EB after 2 weeks because the gameplay was so dreadful. This was the first time I have returned any game for the xbox 360 btw.
The most glaring problem with the gameplay was the new counterpunching system. I haven't followed the series since until I dl'd the FNC demo, so I'm not up to speed with the perfect blocking/countering system works but I definitely can tell the impact it has and I still don't like it. I was pretty solid at FNR3, and now I can't even beat the computer! I've played probably 10 games online and won one fight by accidental KO. I know the game has been changed to add new elements of realism, but the game seems overcomplicated and the things that are supposed to improve the experience alienate those who expected to play like an improved version of FNR3. Now, it feels less like a simulation of the sweet science and more of a chaotic struggle to see who can land counterpunches. Matches end abruptly and don't seem to have much flow or method to them. In FNR3, the player can press a button and the movement/action of his boxer is reliable 100% of the time. In FN4/FNC, there's no hint as so whether the stick movement will result in the correct in-ring movement. Neither is there any guarantee that the punch thrown will land and/or do any damage, despite being in range of course. The gamer in me is embarrassed to admit that playing FN4/FNC feels like a total crap shoot, considering I would otherwise consider myself pretty good at FNR3 (at least 600 or so ranked matches online, 3:1 win-loss ratio). I'm not blaming the game because it's the easier thing to do; I'm blaming the game because I truly feel the game was fixed when it wasn't broken. I could only compare it to the way people felt playing Call of Duty 3 for the first time, after spending countless hours learning and mastering CoD 2. It's almost impossible to consider the two part of the same franchise.
That said, I don't hope to see a full return to the FNR3 style of gameplay. Rather, it's reasonable to think that EA can right the FN franchise by creating future titles using what's worked the most in the past (FNR3's gameplay) and enhance it with the improved graphics and game modes of the newer titles. The boxer share online feature is fantastic and would've boosted FNR3's value through the roof, in my opinion. Things like that are almost worth the purchase of the game alone, but sadly none of it matters because I can't suffer through any more of FN4/FNC's unreliable and frustrating gameplay. The thought of FNR3 loaded with an expanded roster, boxer share, legacy mode, an improved Create a Boxer, realtime physics w/ proper collission detection, etc makes me hopeful but also sad.
I'm going to delete the demo and patiently wait until the next Fight Night title comes out.. I fear the series will go the way of NBA Live/Elite (sorry, EA... low blow, but you gotta stop making things so complicated. Think back on what's worked for you before. Please!)
Honestly, if you can't beat the computer or win an online game... there is something wrong. Just practice more and you'll get better at the game.
