Billy Smith was the first goalie credited with a goal wasn't he? He was the last Islander to touch the puck before it was miss-passed by rob ramage on a delayed penalty call. Basically it was an own goal.
Ron Hextall was first to actually shoot the puck into the open net. twice once in Regular season and once in playoffs.

This is very off-topic, but since Daytripper mentioned Hextall it got me thinking of a game i saw a while back when the Wings played the Flyers. I think it was in the playoffs but can't be for certain. Anyways what happened was a shot went at Hextall and Yzerman crashed the net. As Yzerman came towards Ron, he grabbed his stick and literally ripped it up between Yzermans legs. I've never laughed so hard, and that was the reason I fell in love with Ron Hextall.
Anyone else remember this?

People who wear fur should be shot and their skin worn by an animal. Then they'll know what the animal felt like.

from the link
Smith was also the first NHL goalie to be credited with scoring a goal. On November 28, 1979, in a game between the Islanders and the Colorado Rockies, the Rockies' goaltender left the ice for an extra skater after a delayed penalty was called on the Islanders. The puck deflected off the chest protector of the Islanders' Smith into the corner. Colorado rookie Rob Ramage picked up the puck and accidentally made a blind pass from the corner boards in the opposing zone to the blue line. Nobody was there to receive the pass, and so the puck sailed all the way down the length of the ice and into the Colorado net.
Smith had been the last Islander to touch the puck, and was credited with a goal. The key word is credited. He did nothing to score it, he was the last Isle to touch the puck. He didn't shoot and score. It was fluke and thats all.
If the question was "who was the first goalie to be credited with a goal?" I would say Billy Smith ( I remember when it happened and have the hockey card commerating it) but the question was, "First Goalie to Score" and Hextall was most definately the first to SCORE.
Hextall was the the first to actually SHOOT and score.

from the wikipedia about Hextall
On December 8, 1987, Hextall became the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal by actually shooting the puck into an open net vacated when the opposing team replaced their netminder with an offensive player. (Because hockey's score keeping rule always credits a goal to the last offensive player to touch the puck, on November 28, 1979, Billy Smith of the NHL's New York Islanders was the first goalie to be credited with a goal; however, the puck was accidentally shot into the net by a defensive player as in an own goal.) Hextall replicated the feat in the playoffs on April 11, 1989 against the Washington Capitals, thus becoming the first goalie to score a goal in a playoff game.

What I found hysterical was the quote that said Smith often feigned injuries with great historonics leading to penalties for opposing players!!! He charged Mike Bossy in practice with his stick getting tackled in the process!!! and he always refused to shake hands with the other team after games, he was that passionate!!!! This is unreal, hey Tripper, my gym teacher had that article about Smith scoring hanging up on the bulletin board, and I remember Hextall firing that goal in, I was watching it from Philadelphia Park bettin on the horses... I'll take the fur coat, put it on EBAY those things are expensive...
