GT racing for quite a while has been categorized into several different classes. This done mostly to make GT racing more accessible to those not having huge budgets. Hence GT1 for high end competition and GT2 for lower budget teams. Both classes are similar with the most notable differences being in power and aero.
Lately however, I've been wondering if there is really a point? For example, Corvette is jumping to GT2 after the lack of GT1 competition, destroking the LS7.R to 6.0L from 7.0L and instating a newer 5.5L for the 2010 int'l GT rules change, and now what do we have? A brand new Nissan GT-R GT1 and the Ford supported Matech Ford GT1. Two brand new cars from two proven companies, Nissan having a successful 2008 Super GT season despite 50 kg penalities for the sake of balance, and the FIA GT3 Championship winning Matech with the Ford GT3.
Granted both cars are competing in EU circuits only, but if the demand was there, and the support to get them there existed, I'm sure they would come stateside as well competing against factory Corvettes. Granted there are privateer C6.Rs in the FIA, there not the same as the multiple Le Mans winning factory Corvette Racing team. Not only that, those C6.Rs will be dated when compared to the factory team leaving the GT-R and the FGT1 with an techonolical advantage.
With split classes, we won't get to see the two Kings of the Nurburgring, probably one of the most exciting battles between two extremely legendary and iconic sports cars compete finally on the racing circuit. Why? Because one is GT1, the other is GT2. What about Ferrari? Porsche? How will GT-R and the new FGT1 fair against them? They won't. Different class.
I for one, would much rather be able to see these race tuned, track ready cars pit it out against each other without varied class limitations separating them. In my opinion, all sports cars should be racing against all other sports cars. That's real competition.
What do you guys think? Even if your not a GT racing fan, I know a lot of you are sports car fans. What would you rather see, one single class? Or a split class with fleshed out compeition?

The GT classes are equalized by adding weight penalties, etc. Even if they were in the same class, you won't truly be seeing a shootout. Of the two options, I'd rather see them in once class.

It's a bit more complicated then that. Championships like Super GT use weight penalities but FIA and LM GT are pretty balanced championships using a system a weight, displacement and power limitations depending on class, fuel type, apsiration etc.
Glad to see you sort of agree though. One class, one competition.

Yeah, one class would seem to yield the best racing for the fans.

I'd rather see two or three classes but have to admit that a singular class would add to viewership. The racing would be easier to understand for less fanatic people and be more exciting to watch. But don't understand how club C6.R's wouldn't be competitive versus the GTR or FGT1. The FGT1 is most definitely using a large amount of tech that is just as old as the C6.R's. And the frame. Oooo...that frame design is old.
