Buggy game for sure.
Forged older PhysX files added to the game folder did it for me.
Make sure you don't over clock for now anyway for stability.
Set your cpu and memory to defaults.
Run a stability test on the system. I use OCCT for an hour .
Keep Forged files in the game folder, it won't hurt.
You have Win7 64 bit and I'm not sure how stable that is with the game.
I'm running the game with XP Pro 32 bit now no problems.
Good luck.

Thx for the input stilup but i'm affraid it doesn't work :/
My dad's comp isn't overclocked in any way, and my cpu and memory are setted up on default.
I kept Forged files in the folder but heh.. :/
So i'm back at my place now and i just installed the game on my own computer, it's basicly the same as my father's one, but i use an Asus Rampage II Extrem instead of the DFI and i got 3 GTX285 and not two... Guess what ? The game works PERFECTLY even with 3-way SLI and stuff... So meh, I'd be really sad not having this game working.
Btw I installed the G27 on my father's comp and tried one race with it, it was just SO awesome, and then it crashed on the second race ofc ='(

Ok, Here/s what happened to me. I got my new geforce card. 9400 GT , before I even bought this game. I knew my old 7300 would not run smoothly. Anyway the game worked flawlessly for 2 weeks. I was leveling up in ahurry and having a fcking blast. Best game with my MOMO wheel yet. Then out of the blue, Bam, crash to desktop anytime I started to race. WTF. I mean everytime. I jumped through all of the hoops discussed on this thread. I was ready to give up, I finally just uninstalled the game and manually deleted my save profile. ( with all my millions and 4 sweet cars). . Wiped it all out. Then I did a system restore to earlier date.( works good with some viruses). I was just grabbing at straws by then..
Then I realized My new 9400 card might not be that new. LOL. I updated driver and reinstalled the game from scratch. I'm racing again, but I still don't know why it let me get as far as i was. I was almost leveled out in the game, Level 5 stuff. I'm not sure if it was because graphics card or something else that took resources from performance.. Anyway, I hope as I level up from scratch again it doesn't go buggy again.. I'm weary of it now. Scared to mess with any graphics settings..

I bought this game mid-december (2009 duh). Install went perfectly, game ran smooth at the highest settings. A week later I completely finished it. Then I had an issue with my motherboard causing blue screens which got fixed 2 weeks later. Had to reinstall Vista and all my games, including this one. It still went perfectly and no problems at all.
I go up to Tier4 and then I got my first crash to desktop. After re-starting I still get a crash to desktop. It always happens right after the race has been loaded, or when you get control over your car. I've checked tens of websites with possible work-arounds the past 2 weeks. I can't remember them all anymore but I'll try to list as much as I can.
- Deleted graphicsconfig.xml
- Changed graphics. The only thing that changes is that the crashes happens a few corners later.
- Deleted Physx and re-installed it from the Shift CD. This went good for a while, but the crashes came back again.
- Updated Physx, Nvidia drivers & Directx10.
- Tried compability with Windows 98/ME.
- Changed controller presets.
- Enabling/disabling V-Sync.
- Complete re-install of the game.
- Tried a new game. No crashes during the test lap but when I started career, it came back again. Same goes for Quick Race.
- Tried Windowed mode.
- Patched the game.
- Downloaded 2 dll-files (NxCooking.dll & PhysxExtensions.dll).
Think I tried a few more options but can't remember atm. My pc has Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium, 4 GB RAM, 2x 250 GB HDs, Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb Card, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40.
I seriously don't understand why it started crashing all of in a sudden. Nothing much changed, even after installing some games it still worked fine, I'm pretty sure the problem lies completely at Shift self, not any other program on my PC.
EDIT: Think I have found a solution. At the Nvidia Control Panel I enabled Physx GPU Acceleration and now I've been racing for a hour and no problems yet. I hope it remains this way.

Just bought this game 2 days ago and have spent countless hours trying to get the stupid thing to play. I'm getting the crash right when the very first test track starts to load. Installed both EA patches as well which *should have* fixed it but it didn't. I've tried EVERY solution and combination of solutions listed in this thread with no luck.
My error log in MMC says this and it is the ONLY error for any hardware/software on this machine:
Mine says:
Faulting application name: SHIFT.exe, version: 1.0.2.0, time stamp: 0x4af2ddcf
Faulting module name: SHIFT.exe, version: 1.0.2.0, time stamp: 0x4af2ddcf
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0043a006
Faulting process id: 0x998
Faulting application start time: 0x01cacc913b882c4c
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Need for Speed SHIFT\SHIFT.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Need for Speed SHIFT\SHIFT.exe
Report Id: c6073b32-3884-11df-ba68-ee21018ca1dc
Now error code 0xc0000005 has to do with an "illegal memory access violation" and is most likely due to one of the following: faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software.
Ran a memory test and zero faults (fairly new computer)
Tried various drivers and have zero driver errors or conflicts
Tried disabling DEP (can sometimes cause this error)
Disabled all background programs and flushed the RAM before starting the game
That leaves "poorly written/updated software"
So now I'm trying to do some debugging on the game (which should have been done PRIOR to this game being released for sale). I'll post back here if I figure anything out. If someone else has anything they can post related to this error, PLEASE HELP US ALL OUT AND POST IT!
If anyone from EA reads this, we are still waiting for an official fix for this problem!

I attempted to dig into it more, but EA was nice enough to put security in place preventing debuggers. I'll keep messing with it to work around that security as I have time and see if I can dig into this error some more.

my fix that got shift to work for me
uninstalled latest nvidia drivers and went to a really old stable version forceware version 169.21
running XP SP3
gforce 7800GS
P4 w/ HTT 200FSB
also my ingame options are everything off or set to low. looks like crap, but plays ok except when 14 AI cars are on the track, then it will get a bit choppy, but it works with no crashes for 3 weeks.
hope this helps if you have a slow system like me heh.

I Recently brought this game, loaded fine, then crashed, thought it was my Laptop, but 4 of my friends have bought this and experienced the same problem. This game even crashed on an Alienware MX17, Toshiba Qosmio X500 and a Dell XPS desktop. Think this is a game issue rather than a computer issue..........
Still waiting for a patch to fix this........

Hi I have the same problem that all of you have but, In my game it only happens in one of my two profiles, since my little brother and me need to play in the same PC, we made separated profiles, he plays the game w/o problems , but in the second profile the game crashes to desktop in the first corner in the test lap.
It's very annoying because the game have too much videos that can't be skipped just to start your race and the game crash to desktop in the first corner?...
EDIT: I've downloaded and installed the two patches available for the game, and now it works perfect, even runs faster than before in loading times and on the track, very smooth.
Maybe all of you have tested with the patches but, they worked very well for me, also my PC is Over-clocked, I know most of my Racing games (GRID, Burnaout Paradise, Pro Street) can easily crash when the computer is unstable, so I've made it stable for them.

I just bought this game, and suffered from exactly the same problem also. As soon as I hit the first turn of the test lap, instant crash. Running Windows 7 64 with an Intel i5 and an HD5770. All drivers up to date. Something is wrong here, as my rig should be able to play this game without too much of a problem.
And here is my workaround: As soon as the test race starts, slow the car down to a crawl and creep around the first turn. That's it. From that point on the rest of the game has played fine for me (so far) with good FPS on relatively high settings.
