my name is Loic Argelies and I am the technical director for the Game Face project.
On behalf of the whole development team I would like to thank you all for participating in the BETA. The feedback we have received so far has been both incredible and particularly useful in identifying the remaining issues that are still found in the BETA. Please keep the feedback coming!
To help clarify some of the technical issues encountered with the BETA, I have compiled below a summary of those that were most widely reported.
If you are experiencing odd behavior or plain technical issues, be sure to drop a note via the 'Send Feedback' button in the Game Face Creator or possibly post screenshots in these forums. We do read every single message, and your help is greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, we certainly hope you are enjoying the feature as much as we had fun developing it.
Here goes.
---- [ UPDATED ON 9/25 - GAME FACE BETA 1.1.0 RELEASE ] -----
ALL GAME FACE BETA ISSUES
I am having a problem with Game Face BETA. [insert problem here]
If you are experiencing an issue with Game Face BETA, it could first and foremost be linked to your computer not meeting the minimum hardware or software requirements. To make sure, try the following installation tips.
1. Update your Graphics Drivers
Game Face BETA uses your video card 3D hardware acceleration to display your avatar, using both DirectX and OpenGL recent technologies. Your video card may well be compatible with Game Face, but your graphics drivers could be outdated, rendering the feature unusable.
You should try first to update your Graphics Drivers - For instance, by visiting your video card vendor's website and downloading the most recent graphics drivers for your card.
2. Re-install the Game Face Package
Still having an issue?
Your computer might be missing some of the software components required for using Game Face BETA. The Game Face Package, available for download and install during registration to the feature on the website, will check if either
DirectX 9.0c (March 2009) or
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Client Components are already available on your computer. If they are found missing, the GFP will trigger their installation.
If Game Face BETA does not seem to work, try closing all applications and re-installing the Game Face Package. You will find a download link under the 'Settings' tab of the Game Face Creator.
3. Verify and install missing Software Requirements
If for some reason the steps above did not solve the problem, try installing software requirements manually.
EA SPORTS Game Face BETA uses the following software components:

4. Verify Hardware Requirements
If the above steps were not sufficient, it is time to verify if your hardware is compatible with Game Face BETA 3D rendering requirements.
Required:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista or newer
Graphics: 128MB memory, Hardware shader level 2.0 or more, and OpenGl compatible graphics card
Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox 2+ or Microsoft Internet Explorer 7+
Minimum Recommended (performance may suffer if not met):
CPU: 2Ghz+
RAM: 2GB+
Internet Bandwidth: Broadband Internet connection
Now, on to more specific issues.
GAME FACE CREATOR
1. My Game Face skin is missing (black) and my eyes are red. Help! - Resolved from version 1.0.2
This happens after attempting to generate several new Game Faces in a row, which sometimes cause necessary files to get deleted. We have identified a fix in the next patch release - In the meantime a small workaround would be to systematically save your Game Face after each generation, via the 'Save' button in the Creator.
2. Hairstyles do not seem to work - Whichever I try and pick, it does not appear on my Game Face head. - Resolved from version 1.0.2
This is still being investigated. This could be related to an issue tied to slower internet connection, and hairstyles taking too long to download from the servers in the US. If you are familiar with the 'firebug' developer extension in Firefox, you could try and send an output of what is going on so that we get additional clues.
3. Most hairstyles appear black and white - White on the left side of the head, black on the other side. Is it my computer?- Resolved from version 1.0.2
Unfortunately, you are not alone as this behavior has been widely reported. We are investigating this rendering issue and have narrowed it down to a few potential causes. You can post further screenshots of the problem in these forums, or send us a 'firebug' browser output if you are familiar with this Firefox extension to help us identify the root cause.
4. Game Face was good until... I started using the shape sliders. Then my 3D view 'exploded'.- Resolved from version 1.0.2
Also one that is widely reported, which we are investigating actively. We found a potential cause and will update as soon as we can confirm a fix. In the meantime, it is best to keep away from using the shape sliders.
5. My Game Face shows grey skin/my 3D view only displays a flat brown background!
Either your graphics drivers are outdated - Try following the installation steps indicated in the section 'ALL GAME FACE BETA ISSUES' above,
or your video card is not capable of displaying graphics using hardware shader 2.0.
If neither is your case, let us know - We are working on enabling Game Face rendering on older video cards.
GAME FACE PHOTO GENERATION
1. I tried uploading a photo, but the system told me that there was a server error.
Either you are trying to upload a particularly large photo size (more than a few MB), or the servers are actually having hiccups.
We have identified a few issues linked to connectivity failures with the server, and are working to resolve those.
2. I have gone through all photo preparation steps, then clicked on 'Generate'. Then my browser opened a window which stayed black. Or started opening blank tabs. Or I get a 'GAC error'. Or prints some 'Windows Presentation Foundation' error message. What do I do?
Game Face uses MS .NET Framework web technology during the photo generation process. Once the photo preparation steps are complete, the system invokes the Game Face calculation itself when you click on the 'Generate' button.
If you are unable to get to the generation window, or if it does not function properly, it is likely that your computer does not run the latest .NET Framework version. Try following the installation steps indicated in the section 'ALL GAME FACE BETA ISSUES' above.
3. I set all facial markers in the right position, but when attempting to generate, I get an error saying 'try updating your markers placement'. I tried different placement and different photos, nothing helps. What now?
Game Face uses 'assisted' facial recognition techniques based on hints that you provide to the system, via facial markers placed at specific points and boundaries on your photo. The more precise your markers are, the better the results.
Sometimes if you missed a marker or if the system cannot recompose a human face (such as when using cartoons or say, animals or sci-fi characters), Game Face generation will fail and this message will appear to let you know.
In some cases though, this message may appear because your graphics drivers are outdated. Try following the installation steps indicated in the section 'ALL GAME FACE BETA ISSUES' above.
In other cases, it may be that the generation process took quite a long time (>15 minutes) and the website automatically signed you out. It is a bug that we are working to resolve. In the meantime, you can try opening a new window on the website homepage while the generation is running, and sign in to the website again. Since the website recognizes you as signed in, the generation process may be able to upload your Game Face results without complaining.
- Resolved from version 1.1.0
Lastly, we have identified an issue with Flash dropping mouse focus while dragging the markers around - We will provide a fix in the next release, so that in this case Game Face will no longer complain about misplaced markers.
If you have tried the above to no avail, let us know.
4. I used a side photo to improve likeness but now my Game Face shows a 'double-nose'. Help!
This one is likely caused by imprecise facial marker placement. Try setting the markers as shown on the portrait on the right side of the window, or try setting the nose markers at the outer nostril boundaries.
5. Game Face Photo Generation process takes way too long...
During the generation process, Game Face is trying to recompose a 3D face from 2D image information. These calculations can be rather demanding on your computer, especially on older computers or computers using older video cards. In most cases, getting a more recent graphics card will improve generation times dramatically.
Before getting new hardware though, try either or all of the following:
* Try following the installation steps indicated in the section 'ALL GAME FACE BETA ISSUES' above.
* Try making sure no other application is running on your computer that may require processor or memory resources.
Also, and although likeness may not be as resembling, try using a front photo only - Generation times are doubled if side photo is used.
* [ more involved ] Try disabling OpenGL anti-aliasing in your video card settings, and verify your screen resolution is set on 24 or 32 bits color mode.
* [ more involved ] Verify that your graphics card does enable OpenGL hardware acceleration.
* Let it run - it should complete eventually (very old hardware has shown to take up to three hours, which hopefully is not your case).
If nothing helps, let us know.
TIPS & TRICKS
1. How can I get a 2D image of my Game Face?
Simply save your Game Face using the Creator 'Save' button, then access your profile page. A 2D picture will be shown, that you can save or link to from the forums.
2. I found a great picture on the web. Can I use it directly in Game Face Creator without saving it first on my computer?
Yes. When asked to select a photo from your computer, simply paste the web photo url directly. The photo will get downloaded automatically (jpeg only).
3. My Game Face is awesome. Will i get to keep it when the BETA is complete?
Yes.
4. If I download Game Face for use with my Virtual Pro in FIFA 10 Xbox360/PS3, can i further edit it inside the game?
Yes. When FIFA 2010 is out, you will have the ability to download your Game Face and apply it onto your FIFA 10 Virtual Pro - and further change hairstyles and other attributes.
