Hi
I have had BF2 and the SF expansion since they came out. Never had much crashing problems with them (was using XP). I had reformatted a while back (patch 1.2-1.3 If memory serves me correct and upgraded to vista), and hadnt installed BF2 again; not that I dont enjoy the game, but I couldnt find my install manual, so no CD-key. I found it today (luck has it that 1.5 comes out as well) so I decided to install it, vanilla->1.41->1.50. Then the crashing started.
I looked around for fixes, but none of them seemed to pertain to my problem. I was using the DVD version, so that download manager problem people were talking about wasnt relevant. What would happen is as soon as I click on the Audio tab, I get a CTD. When I tried to join (seemingly random) servers, mostly they would crash but sometimes they would work fine. It was a curious error, since punkbuster was updated fine and I could connect to certain servers that had it enabled and sound card drivers were up to date (asus xonar essence). So I thought since it might be an audio related error, let me disable EAX through the documents/battlefield 2/profiles/0001/audio.con file. No luck. So I rejoined the server that had worked (and it still works), and tried to figure out what made it different.
VOIP. Yes, for some reason VOIP is causing me to crash. I dont know why, but any server that has VOIP enabled will cause an instant CTD; ones that have it disabled work fine. So back to the Audio.con file I go, and disable the following:
AudioSettings.setVoipEnabled 0
AudioSettings.setVoipPlaybackVolume 0
AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureVolume 0
AudioSettings.setVoipBoostEnabled 0
AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 0
and voila! I can now connect to every server on the list fine. Still cannot access the audio tab, but a minor inconvenience. A small note, voipplayback volume, capturevolume, usepushtotalk seem to automatically revert back to 1 however this does not seem to matter; it appears as if its just setVoipEnabled and setVoupBoostEnabled (not sure on this one, I dont remember if it was 0 or 1 in the first place). One thing to add, during setup (from DVD) there was a point in the installation where it froze. I gave it about 20 minutes, and looked in task manager to see what was up. There was a process called bf2voice I believe, and I googled it which lead to someone with the same problem. They just ended the process and the install completed; so I followed suit, and instantly the install completed. Im assuming this is causing the problem, however Ive seen a few other people with the same kind of crashing so I decided to post this apparent fix.
Any feedback would be great.
My system specs are:
Amd athlon x2 6000+
4x1GB corsair ddr2 800mhz sticks, running in dual channel I believe
8800GTX
Vista home premium 32bit
Asus xonar essence STX sound card
Asus M2N-Sli deluxe mobo
not sure if anything else is relevant to this problem, I'm nowhere near close to running out of space/memory.

Since I installed patch 1.5 over 1.41 on an unmodded game, I can play singleplayer but when I click to join a multiplayer game I get CTD. Game worked fine before this and my specs are very good.
Anyone else having this problem or know a way to fix it?
Thanks,
Tim.

I'm having same problem. Game worked perfectly prior to 1.5 patch. Installed it, logged in, then went to join a Blue Pearl server, and CTD!
Restarted game, tried to join a server running Mashtuur City....CTD!
Currently reinstalling game and am prompted to reboot. Lets see!

I've got the same problem. Was playing BF2 1.41 no problems 10 mins before installing v1.5 and now when I try to pull BF2 up it doesn't even come up. Black screen flashes and it goes straight back to desktop. The only thing I can think of for you guys who are having issues connecting to games is go to www.evenbalance.com and run the pbsetup.exe to update your BF2 version with Punkbuster. Can anyone help me with my problem please? BF2 has been a royal pain in the * with all its problems...

I am having the same issues. Everything is updated, everything. THe game opens to a black screen flashes, then goes away. Game never does actually launch, but in the 1.4 patch, ran great. THis is a EA problem, not something we can figure out. Since Win7 isnt a supported OS< EA never did test it on this platform, so we will wait till Oct23rd or later for a fix from them. How do I know? I use to work for EA as a QA tester till they did their lay offs last year, so I know their policy. They wont support something that isnt support, hence Win7 isnt a true OS till Oct 22nd. So lets all sit and wait in pain....

Ok, I had the same problem with CTD right as the game started. Messed around with settings(made it native rez and made sure refresh rates matched)/ran in administrator mode and managed to get in game. Then It would crash right as I logged in, and I realized I was clicking on the "Play BF2 Online Now!" icon instead of the normal one. Problem solved for now, so now joining servers is the problem.
If when you click on the audio tab the game crashes, try going into the audio config (user/documents/battlefield 2/profiles/0001/audio.CON) and disabling VOIP and EAX (since I believe EAX doesnt work anyways in vista). Actually, before you do that try something else first. Look at the server list. See how theres a little headphone icon next to some servers, and missing from some others? Try joining one without the icon. If it works, then try joining one with the headphones. If it crashes then try disabling VOIP. If that works, then lets hope EA can fix it.
Just make sure to be very specific when saying when it crashes; when you click on something, when it reaches a certain loading point, after a cinematic plays, before it plays even. With the audio problem Im having I managed to figure it out just because it was crashing trying to click on the audio tab; so it had to have been an audio problem which lead to figuring out it was the VOIP being enabled causing the issue.

I know that selecting EAX when you don't have a EAX-capable soundcard (ie Creative), can cause a crash to desktop when either the player or a server tries to use it. Hence, its difficult to unselect when you can't even get to the page to unselect it. I had to uninstall and reinstall making sure I didn't select that EAX, which is ok, because it wouldn't add anything to my game since I have a Realtek sound solution.
