I can't speak for the ps3 side and did state in my post I was referring to the xbox360 side. More often than not I notice that the guys who tear up the daily am with scores of 28-35 under are the same guys who win the single try events, or at least place in the top 10. This says to me they are excellent players regardless of the dubious methods they employ to win/place high at all costs. I regard myself as a very good player who has played the series since TW01, but I really think I would struggle to consistently shoot -30 or better even if I did have a turbo pad or bothered to map. I used one in TW05 and did break 40 on two or three courses but that was when we had the big blue hook drives.
Mind you, give a few of them a stock controller and I would fancy my chances against (some) of them.
That is my whole point of contention with the programmable 3rd party controller. With all the talk of mapping and replaying a round until you get it pefect,IMO ,it can only be achieved with a third part controller straight shooter. A regular controller will not give you 18 straight drives,18 straight approach shots and 18 straight putts all back to back.

I agree with your point about mapping being nigh on impossible with a stock controller. Not so much re: straight shots & putts though but more re: hitting the required hitting %'s consistently to hole out 8 or 9 times in a round. This has much more of an effect on my score than being able to hit the ball straight (which is easy to achieve with the stock 360 controller). The other issue is having to retain a certain sweetspot which compromises distance and workability which you don't need to worry about with a 3rd party controller.
Still, in saying all this, this doesn't make those who do use one and map bad players....far from it.

all of these issues with hori's, mapping (only useful with horis) -not an issue, continuous discards and retries along with multiple qualifying and everybody checking the forcast hourly for the tourney of the week, is it possible for EA to make a patch which fixes all of these things or do i have to wait for tiger 2011 or worse tiger 2012 ?? my best of 17 under with my pro stats at 10.2/10.4/10.6/11.5 avg drive dist 310 on a stock controller (no aces) could be so much more with a 3rd party but why cheat ? who is ea making rich anyway ! take the money away from these 3rd party controllers or like ive seen posted a couple times now .. modded tournaments !! but with smaller prizes than the REAL tournaments ona 6 axis with the REAL men/women golfers .. fyi im a 2 in real life so this erks me even more :@

Well, I played in this week's tournament and wasn't close to the top 10, but then I didn't think I would be given all the things folks have mentioned in this thread. Plus, really, I'm just not as good as most of the folks who play the tournaments, so there is that. I just hope that EA is indeed policing the "qualify once only" approach. It would also be nice if they sent out an email to the qualifiers each week so they would know without having to look at the leaderboard, since as far as I know there would be no real way to tell unless all previous qualifiers are locked out of the tournaments that follow the one in which they qualified.
To take it to another extreme, wouldn't be a nice bit of dark humor if, out of a total pool (talking North America only here but would apply to others as well I think) of, what, 90 or 100 potential winners, that there are in truth only about 10 distinct people, given the potential of multiple gamer tags and so forth? Can't recall the point at which people actually have to show up in person somewhere but imagine having the final playoff being one person playing against himself.
I think I'd call in sick...

Been thinking about this a bit.
Essentially what this ends up being is a really nice prize to the best cheater.
Yeah, go ahead, flame me. Whatever.
The fact is that whoever produces the best score at home (with their str8 shooter) and the 0 wind combined with course mapping (color by number style) will NOT be able to reproduce their results under ANY other conditions (i.e. standard controller, some wind and no mapping.)
So the guy that shoots -36 at home will end up shooting -24 IRL with witnesses.
May the best cheeser win!

You're right it doesn't make them BAD players. In fact, it is in no way indicative of their skills at all. It says nothing about how they play the game, because....well... they aren't playing the game. They are simply taking notes on how to hole out 80% of the time and using a 100% consistent way to reproduce the results that requires no skill, only the patience to take notes methodically.
If I wanted a competition of patience, I would play tic-tac-toe and wait for my opponent to make a boo-boo.

Not necessarily true. We don't know how good any player is when the lights are on and they are playing for something tangible instead of bragging rights.
In the EA Sports Internet TOUR for TW99 PC back in October 1999, there were 8 finalists that qualified to play TW99 at Las Vegas for $10,000 cash to the winner and all finalists made money just for qualifying. All finalists (myself included) were accused of cheating to win 1st or 2nd in the four Qualifying tournaments. The first two rounds of the final tournament were played at each users home. The final two rounds were played in the TPC Summerlin Grand Ballroom in front of a crowd of about 2000 spectators on EA's computers. None of us were allowed to bring our own mouse or anything from home to compete with. The scoring in the final two rounds from each competitor pretty much matched up to the first two rounds from home. So to suggest that someone shooting -36 at home would only be able to shoot 66% of that score, might not be accurate. You never know how ANY user will perform until there is something truly on the line to play for.....such as the prizes in the Gillette tournament and/or $10,000......

Fair enough.... but this I do know..... I have seen players (one in particular) that consistently scores outrageously low scores on the TP dailies (even with single try variable wind) and yet of the several times I have played against this player online (where they do not have the opportunity to map out, color-by-number style, the whole course) this player cannot come close to holing out 12 or 13 of 18 like they can in the dailies. You explain that one to me; or better yet, continue to dilute yourself and everyone else into believing that the outrageous scores being posted are being achieved fairly.
BTW, I know of several people on my friend's list who love the game, but have shied away from playing (or purchasing ever again) because of all the cheating, cheesing, whatever you want to call it, that is going on. So, in essence, EA is losing money over this... and that is the bottom line.
EDIT: I would be curious to see if this tournament yields the same results. Will the person that won with -36 be able to come close to that IRL? I request that this thread is updated once the answer is known.

They must be cheating if they can shoot better than you Ex
I agree with most of what you say but to lump everyone that shoots insane scores in this catagory of "cheese" is unfair, there are plenty of players than can play this good with out cheese, more than you think.
Is it that hard to believe that some have COMPLETELY mastered this game?

I just found this and thought I would pass it along. EA has set up a forum specifically for the Gillette Champions of Gaming.

You know what Tim, that is fair enough.
May i formally request something?
When this competition is all over, I would be curious to see the submissions of the top 16 players from the first submitted score to the last.
Help me find faith in honesty again.

Does anybody know how long EA take to confirm your qualification from the weekly tournaments?
I think I qualified for the Sawgrass tourney last week - well, I finished in 12th, but plenty of people above me had already qualified in previous weeks, which made the leaderboards totally confusing.
I don't really wanna try again this week as I don't want to re-try for a qualifying event if I'm already in the knockouts as 1. There's no point and 2. I don't wanna mess up someone else's leaderboard.
Cheers!

This reminds me of the Donkey Kong controversy ("A Fistful of Quarters" ... available on Netflix to stream).
This guy buys a machine and gets real good at the game, posts a high score, then challenges the reigning champion to play him in public, but the other guy always chickens out and doesn't show up. He only plays at home and sends in videotapes of his scores....
I played a guy one on one the other day. He shoots like a 17 for 9 holes and kills me. Holes in one, holes out ridiculously... it was obvious he was playing differently than everybody else on online. Am I not supposed to assume he's using some "edge"... you can call it cheating or cheesing, it's still ridiculous. The funny part is that I had basically no points to take. What's the point of even playing then? Is it "fun" for these guys to do this to people? To waste their time? I just don't get their motivation...

Regarding the ridiculously low scores being shot, specifically in the COG competition, I can't understand how people are scoring this low without cheating. One example is on hole 1 at Wentworth during Week 8. The hole is 473 yards long, with a 6 mph wind from the left, and the tournament is played under Tour Pro conditions (no power boost, spin or putt preview). Even under those conditions there were two people who got a hole-in-one! WTF! Fifty-nine (59) people scored an eagle (I assume most of those holed out from the fairway), and only fifty-six (56) good golfers scored a birdie.
I normally post around 9-13 under in TP mode, and 18-22 under in Amateur. I usually make 1 or 2 mistakes a round; errant drives, bad distance on approach, or just a missed putt.
I replayed that hole dozens of times, and came close to holing out from the fairway a couple of times, so I can understand how it's possible to score an eagle without cheating. But a hole-in-one? No way, not a chance. No one hits a drive 473 yards without a helping gale force wind and power boost (unless it's off a cliff).
Can someone please tell me how you can hit a drive 473 yards in those conditions without cheating? Anyone? I didn't think so.
