We all know it's an easy goal. It's a high percentage goal in real life as well, that's why the saves are always so amazing.
However, in real life they don't happen all that often because usually a d-man takes the passing lane.
In NHL10, most of the time, I have two blocking that passing lane, yet the puck makes it to the other side. Sometimes it goes through the blade of the stick... Sad times indeed. It's come to the point that I have to resort to what should be an interference call (checking the receiver. Only issue being that the puck carrier can make an in close move then.
Lucky me, most players only have this one strategy.
I guess it boils down to the d-man not being all that aware of the passing lanes at all.

Or for those really bad offensive players you can just lay on the ice, and they will have no idea what to do. (If they had any skill it all they would just skate around you and score, but most people who only cross crease don't have the skill.)

Too many times has it banked in off of my player. The check is much safer. I've never received a penalty and the success rate is quite low.
Another thing that is quite annoying is what the other team is just constantly checking my guy and I can't even do anything against it. That however is the opponent defensive AI.

Checking is the best way to stop it but you have to be careful with the lag if you miss you'll be way out of position.

Cross crease is pretty dammmned decreased versus past years.
I'll give EA credit 4 this. Goalies make great desperation saves. Must have saved atleast 40% of goals
I think the irritating thing is playing an opponent who tries this over and over and over. However, its very easy to play them once you realize that's all they are capable of doing. Once you realize the pattern you can stop them dead in the tracks because they have a tendency to come up the ice the same way.
Best bet is strong D, playing man on man and decreasing passing lanes with effective poke checks and breaking up play with dives on ice as a desperation tool to D man.
I actually find the players who use the constant slow wrist shots at the goalie at 5 mph to be unsportsmanlike because rather play hockey they spend the entire game focusing on how to score a cheap goal that would rarely happen in real life.
Atleast the cross crease happens in real hockey. The heathens who spend the majority of their time in the offensive zone shooting really slow wristers drive me nuts. Atleast you can do something against the cross-creasers. But if the wrister is at the right speed & shot at the right direction it leaves the goalie out of position and vulnerable. Those who have mastered this art of the slow wrister get an unfair cheap goal IMHO. And, unfortunately, EA rewards them for their garbage play.

I totally agree!
The only real problem I have with this is the defensive AI. It's just horrible in this situation. Pathetic even.
I can press RT as much as I want, the player I switch to is never the right one (something I found to happen a lot in 10, more than in 09), so I need several presses and then I may get there.
Bring back the hold button ? press button ? for specific player.
It worked, and it worked well.
