Hello to all you online players this if for you guys. I have been playing online for a while now and one thing I have noticed about my game is that when I play someone who is ranked considerably lower than I am I tend to dumb down my game and that has caused me to lose more than a few games.

So you say, what is the “scientific experiment”? This is what I started doing and I was immediately amazed.

When I select ranked match and I am paired with my opponent I turn my back until the match is about to start. That way I do not know what rank the player I am playing is. I have had some of the most amazing matches with someone with half my rank and have wiped some people 3-0 and at the end of the match I realize they are ranked well above me. I mean you will really be surprised but most of all I am playing my best now because I play everyone the same.

Try it and post here with your results. IT'S FUN.

I wanted to give you guys an update on my findings.

1. This is the most fun I have had since I started playing the game. I can't believe how much fun it is to play an unknown opponent.
2. I have played 16 matches since I started doing this and I have lost 2.
3. I had a win streak of 6 and now I am on an 8 game streak.

In short, I seem to be playing much better more consistently.

Have fun and keep em guessing.

Do you play Doubles?
I play Doubles, I look at the rank and beat my opponents badly, killed the #1 ranked doubles team 6-1 the other day and will be #1 shortly
My play changes none

You bring up an interesting point Gameuvlife. I've never played GST, but I've been playing online games since Madden 03. I've noticed that when I would play the top ranked guys I would try and get to fine with my game, always trying to run the perect play and what-not, and this in turn costed me many matches. Then when EA stopped posting records and rank in the Play Now settings, I just sorta played my game no matter what. And I found myself beating the top ranked guys because I wasn't trying to do too much. I wouldn't say I'm at a phsycological advantage when I don't know my opponent's rank, but I'd say that I'm not at a physcological dis-advantage when I don't know their rank. So the latter is better than the former.

Well, LOWS I am glad you "killed the #1 ranked doubles team 6-1", I am very happy for you. I am also thrilled that your gameplay is not psychologically affected by the expected gameplay level of your opponent, unfortunately that is not the case for me.

Keep playing, I hope you get to #1.

Exactly, I just feel like I play a more consistent game when I don't know. My biggest problem is underestimating an opponent. Many really good players have multiple accounts and some of them are ranked low but they still play the same no matter which account they are using.

I do feel bad when I viciously whip the crap out of a real noob though.

Very definitely the ranking of an opponent affects me!

I have lost many matches because of not taking a lower ranked player seriously enough.

Conversely, I concentrate double hard when playing difficult known rivals. I have been having lots of matches with PHILBEAR82 recently. I always used to beat him easily but he has improved a lot and we played a session recently and he beat me 4 times in row. Since then, I concentrate 120% whenever we are paired, (alot) and I havent lost to him since. Its funny , I can concentrate so hard against him that I can beat him 3-0 or 3-1 barely losing a point , yet play very close tie break matches against people who are MUCH more inferior than he is.
The power of the mind.

Anyway Lowscores, you think you are so good? add me as a friend and DARE to try and beat ME, Im on a roll recently!!

My game used to change but with all the people playing on different personas nowadays Im just as likely to be playing a top 10 player as the rank of the guy I am actually playing so it doesnt change my game anymore.
