Frank "the German" Schweihs, a reputed Chicago Outfit enforcer once described as one of the most feared men in the city, died Wednesday in a North Side hospital after being transferred from the Metropolitan Correction Center, where he was awaiting trial.
Schweihs, 78, was cancer-stricken and too ill to face charges in last year's landmark Family Secrets case, one of the biggest mob trials in Chicago's history. The frail Schweihs was scheduled to go to trial Oct. 28. He appeared at recent hearings in federal court in a wheelchair.
On Wednesday, Schweihs died in Thorek Memorial Hospital, said jail spokesman Vincent Shaw.
Schweihs initially went on the lam after the sweeping indictment came down in 2005, but authorities were able to track him down in an apartment complex in a small town in Kentucky late that year.
His upcoming trial had been threatened when Schweihs signed a do-not-resuscitate order that might have forced officials to move him from the downtown jail, which has no medical facility. But Schweihs rescinded the order.
During the Family Secrets trial, in which five of Schweihs' co-defendants were found guilty, witnesses testified that Schweihs was a henchman for capo Joey "the Clown" Lombardo.
Schweihs was identified during the trial as being involved in the 1974 hit in Bensenville on Lombardo business partner and federal witness Daniel Seifert.
Schweihs' last court appearance June 10 was memorable, as he complained loudly and barked at federal prosecutors. One of them, Assistant U.S. Atty. Markus Funk, who was part of the trial team on Family Secrets, had looked in his direction as he spoke with his attorney Ellen Domph.
"You makin' eyes at me?" Schweihs snarled. "Do I look like a [expletive] to you or something?"
In a recent court filing, prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge James Zagel to seat an anonymous jury to hear the Schweihs case, noting that he used violence to rise in the Outfit starting in the 1960s.
"Throughout this phase of his life, Schweihs continued to use seemingly irrational brutality for 'effect,' portraying himself as the consummate 'tough guy' at every opportunity," the government's brief stated.
Trial testimony during last year's Family Secrets case made it clear that Schweihs was someone who others linked to the mob feared most.
Michael Spilotro, who was killed in a mob hit along with his brother, once told his daughter that if she ever saw Schweihs around their home, she was to call 911 immediately. Brothers James and Mickey Marcello, defendants in the case, had another nickname for him: " Hitler."

It's ashamed that the courts would even bother trying to prosecute a 70 year old man. I mean the guys gonna die pretty soon anyway and yet they still have to mess with him. Also instead of trying to go after this guy, why not spend all that time, effort, and money into bringing down some of the guys who are out of jail causing havoc on the streets right now. I mean the guys probably Already serving a life sentence so what is another life sentence going to do to him.

I know what you guys are saying I mean sure hes relatively old and he had cancer but he was still a mob figure. He could have given the police information on something too and no matter what, he should be tried(verb form of trial I dunno) for his crimes even if he didnt live long enough for any consequences on him. There is no age limit to murder trials

So what if he murdered people. I'd do it just the same. People including myself, have families to provide for. And just like him; I'd rather burn in hell and see my family safe and happy, and prosperous, than live life seeing my family hurting and struggling to get by.
I think anyone though who is willing to sell out, should be shot in the face. The men your selling out protected you, paid you, and gave you a wealthy lifestyle. What gives you the right to put them in the gutter when your just as guilty as your bosses. Sure you can take 3 or 400 hundred soldiers off the streets, but guess what... it will all be rebuilt sooner than we all think. They call it Organized Crime for a reason; these aren't idiots you're trying to put away.

well no families arent just rebuilt and "organized crime" is not as organized as you think.. there is not always a peaceful transition of power in there family and when a whole bunch of people from the top to the bottom get jailed theres a lot of new faces in the game which can easily lead to bloodshed. What gives a person a right to sell out people just as guilty as them is are justice system and since your talking about people getting shot in the face then I guess every single person related to "organized crime" should be shot in the face because most of them would all sell out each other when faced with a long jail time.

i have to say that today's mob figures would sell each other out at any price...I just read a book about Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso, and he turned rat. If the old school mafiosi were still around then there would be none of this informant, flipped guys ***. Organized crime would be operational on a large scale if the old school mafiosi were running it. These new guys have no loyalty, no honor. The word mafia in Italian means "man of respect"...personally I think rats should be murdered. You got into the business...you knew what the risks were, now you can get yourself out of it. They think this is the only way out? Mob figures had so many guards on their payroll that some of them lived like kings in prison while still running their families. So don't let the stereotype that prison for them was hell affect you because for a lot it wasn't. Especially the bosses. Take Sammy "The Bull" Gravano for instance. He got up on the stand, sang like a bird, got 6 and half years, kept all his cash, and he was off the hook. Then Gaspipe tried to testify that Gravano wasn't telling the entire truth about the number of muders he was involved in, so they let him rot in jail. He tried telling them that the Federal Agents were dirty and they wouldn't let him tesitfy. So see, there's no gain from flipping. Sammy the Bull is now selling drugs to kids and under constant watch by the Feds.

you guys are mob worshipers... these guys are criminals, the lowest of the low. I find them interesting yes, but I also would not shed a tear if they go to prison. Frank schweihs was a complete physcopath who not only murdered other fellow mobsters but murdered innocent people to. Its one thing to kill people who chose the street life and new what could happen, but innocent people no. Frank was a lead suspect in a young girl's death whom he was dating. by the way she was just a kid, and he was in his 30's when he was dating her. Not only was he basically a pedophile, he also killed an innocent young girl. That and others. He deserves to rot in hell, but he derserved more to rot in prison and be Big leroys * before he croaked.
Sammy was a loser and I do think its crazy he got off with 19 murders (1 committed by himself) the way he did. but karma is a * and he got his.
casso is a lone nut who also murdered plenty of innocent people. A construction worker because he did not like the work he did on his house or something. Casso also claims he could of stopped 911.. pleaseeee
actually to flip it around, theres no point of being a mobster now, because 9 out of 10 flip. You dont even have to worry about being murdered because you will be lucky to even last on the street before one of your "BEST" friends gives you up
