Need for Speed Racing Games

Can anyone tell me how to add extra remotes in the NFS Nitro game for Wii ?
I have checked out seemingly every option and cannot get it to add a second remote. The instruction sheet that came with the game says: "Just connect additional controllers, then select a control interface and car." I tried that but it will not let me add a second remote. What am I missing?

you have to be sure that you have paired the second remote with the system first. then when selecting the race it will ask for additional players.
