I have no idea if this will be the case for everyone, but I though I'd share if it helps some.
Try setting your AF to 8x, and see if that helps. I found having it set any lower or higher resulted in unstable and low FPS.

In my case I went from 10 - 15FPS in combat to a stable 23FPS in combat.
This is with everything on medium with HBAO off and 2xAA.

I've just discovered this, for those using a 5.1 speaker setup, try turning your system to 2.1 in windows. I gained around an extra 5 - 8FPS.
It's now playable even when in combat

Thought I'd post it since this improved performance for me. I'm curious what other peoples results will be.

raising the AF raised FPS?

I suppose it can happen in this game, considering I get worse performance at lower resolutions...

Ya it's strange. If I had anything higher or lower than 8xAF, I had unstable and low FPS.

Let me know if works.

Do it.

I've read that helped some. But with me it just disabled allowing AA and had no difference.

If I were to guess, they designed it to only work in DX10+.

You guys want some more FPS boosts? Turn shadows down and AA to 1x.

It's called tweaking. Everyone complaining about how this game is not optimised and how it won't run on their 9800GT and their 2GHz CPU doesn't seem to understand that system requirements change.

Intel E8400

I don't mean to be insulting, but god damn are you actually reading any of these threads? The game *is* pretty much un-optimized. I mean, i have low specs and i'm not too unhappy about how it performs for me, but a lot of people with very high-end computers are having to run the game on medium, which is just ridiculous.
