amd athlon xp 2600 1 gig ram.

nvidia 6200 512mb graphics card.

game randomly crashes to desktop while playing. i get good days and bad days.

anybody know what would be causing this? I put the graphics settings on low. have low resolution. updated drivers.... Is the computer that weak? graphics card overheating? ever hear of this problem?

thanks.

Coolout, your best bet is to make sure that anything else that's open on your computer is closed before you start the game ( especially your anti-virus........ you don't need it while playing the game, as you're directly connected only to EA's servers while playing ). Also, have you instituted the "confidence meter" fix that's stickied on this forum?

Otto

ya I have tried that... its my fathers pc actually. He just has to turn the graphics all the way down only thing that helps... just something with his hardware that tiger woods doesn't like, it randomly crashes to desktop and closes tw out during the game, no message or anyhing.

its actually my old pc i used to have and happened to me too back in 05... only with tiger woods though. dunno. i put a real nice graphics card in it one time.. changed the memory, put a better fan on the processor nothing worked. It might just be something in the program doesn't like the compaq motherboard or athlon processor.. i dunno...

turning most of the graphics off does help though. because he can play a couple games with no crash usually. If he turns them up though he might not even make it through nine holes. thats why i always thought heat problem, this is the only game he plays but i used to play alot of games on there no problems, but maybe they weren't as graphic intensive as tiger. maybe its his mother board itself getting too hot... who knows, or maybe an issue with his motherboard conflicting with tiger and directx, its always been a mystery.

it was a shot in the dark i thought maybe by chance someone would come up with a crazy idea i could try after all these years, but thanks for replying though otto.

It's a pretty old processor....... there's a chance that the game is taxing enough to overheat either the cpu or the graphix card just enough to cause a crash. When's the last time you updated the driver? I kinda tend to lean towards that as the real problem.

I had some issues like that late in '04 and early '08 with an Nvidia card ( MX400) that only got solved by rolling back to an older driver.......... took a lot of trial and error and a whole lotta time. Finally said screw it , and a buddy in SC sent me an old ATI card ,which lasted me through 06.

its not the graphics card... i once put a 500 dollar graphics card in it just for kicks years ago, with updated drivers... when it comes to pc parts i go to microcenter to test stuff out and then return it full money back. I used to do the same thing at comp usa as well, before they closed down. I never order pc parts online. Cause half the time its all theory, and it doesn't work out. in short it didn't help, i got slightly better framerates, and could run an extremely higher resolution... but it still crashed randomly.

and ya we've tried dozens of drivers for the 6200. My father actually does find an older driver one to work best on it. I have a similar problem on my 7600 GS. newer drivers just won't work at all anymore even for windows ...lol

its possible the fan is still not enough and the cpu is overheating.... although i've installed temperature monitors on there for cpu and easytune5 for the GPU, granted they are usually never accurate, but you can monitor any drastic change. I still have a suspicion it has to do with the motherboard, and something about it tiger woods doesn't like, along with directx. either that or the motherboard itself gets too hot. Its strange.

I did see a post on here while searching of someone with same problem, of random crashes to desktop during gameplay. And an EA moderator asked him for his directx dialog report, which the guy posted. but the EA guy never responded back in the forum so i dunno if there was ever a solution.

Do you play any other games on the PC? If you do, do they result in random crashes as well?

only tiger woods has random crashes. I used to play counterstrike on it no problems, and a few other games. not sure if they are as graphic intensive as tiger woods though.

What operating system?
have you tried removing the side panel to allow air flow?
2 gig ram better than 1 in windows XP,Vista and windows 7 need at least 3 gig ram.
Is the power supply putting out enough power like 300 or 400 watts?
The current system is really bottom of the line.

And of course This is my humble opinion.

Coolout.. I think McJeb is on to something, there. Most OS crashes are RAM-related. In this case, the game might be .... nah,, if you tried a very high end graphics card, it would not likely be stealing memory from your RAM...............Still, an upgrade in RAm is worth a try, given that you're probably using DDR, and not DDR2 , with that system. Adding another Gig of DDR RAM would improve your performance overall, and there's a small chance that that's really the crux of your problem.

we have changed the ram, but only to 1 gig i believe. just to a better performing dual ram. The vid card is also 512 meg video ram. unless maybe it has to do with bios settings.

I remember my uncle having slower pentium pc... with an integrated ibm card... it ran slow but never crashed like the athlon and the nvidia card.

I still think its the processor or motherboard. something about them the tiger woods software doesn't like. its actually part of the reason i bought another pc. and left my father with the burden...lol

my father tells me if he puts the grass off... he doesn't crash that much... but if has the grass on it won't last an hour before he crashes. could this still mean memory instability?

when searching this problem online... the only people who have it... are other guys who have the athlon xp processor. regardless of mobo. very interesting.

we've done everything though reformatted, replaced ram, vid card, reseated heat sink bought a better cpu fan, i dont' think i ever updated the bios though... but i believe i checked and there was none. maybe i should check again.

i think its just the cpu. Athlong xp processors are garbage i guess.

Athlon XP processors are good i have run tiger woods on several different AMD CPU's. You are trying to run a demanding game on a bottom of the line system. If you have only 1 gig of ram your operating system use most of that itself putting you in virtual memory which can cause you bad slowdown and crashes.
