i've noticed in NFS prostreet that as soon as you hit 245 mph the steering fails to work all you can do is go straight. this has been very hindering on speed challenges when i'm drafting somebody in a turn and all of the sudden the steering fails and i usually go off the road and hit a light post or launch off a hill and crash and burn all over the road. all i was wondering wasif this happens to everybody or if my game is defective. another thing is that i can never get a car over 251 mph that is probably just a governer cuz they want the game at least a little realistic.

I experience both problems with the PS2 version.
Try tuning your speed car to redline just below 245 MPH, that way you can push it as much as you like AND you get better acceleration.

In 15 career/games (on PC) I have managed a top speed of 264-266 mph with a 911 Turbo a couple of times -- but I don't know how. Helpful, huh? One thing, I didn't notice the 250+ speeds until the race was over. I'm not really sure the car was actually making that speed, as I have noticed that the speeds and times posted in the personal stats area of the garage are often not up to date or are apparently picked out of thin air by the AI.
