i am a freshman in high school and just got back from golf practice. I played nine holes after practice. This is my first time to really play golf. I shot a 74. i think this average for a beginner

For your first time on a course that's ok. Your never going to shoot well the first time out. You have to get familiar with a course and how things go. Once you get comfortable and more familiar with the game your scores will drop pretty good then level off to the golfer you currently are. After that it's lot's of practice for a game you will never perfect.
Just dont get discouraged though the first years of golf. Focus on what you need to improve, and try and take positives out of anything you can. The first time I golfed I probably shot a lot worse than that, and I shot a 70 a few weeks ago so I would say its a good start.
If you can afford it, take lessons as soon as possible before you develop a lot of bad habits. I played for 5 years before taking lessons. It was a mistake to wait so long. I went backwards for a year or so but then the lessons paid off and I got my handicap down to single digits within a couple of years.

i agree john, very nice round for your first time out..i dont know if you work at all? but during the summer a few years ago when i didnt have my drivers license, i had a membership at a small municipal course (got a discount for being a highschool golfer) and would have my parents drop me off before work, then come and pick me up on the way home from work...met a lot of members and got a lot of pointers from them and the more practice you get, the better you're going to play...keep it up
yea dont feel too bad. my first practice round in hs i shot a 64. after that i avged 52 on for most of the year. currently at the end of my junior year and im avging about 43 on 9 and the occassional 36-39 lol. take lessons, i didnt start until a month or two ago and its very helpful. just keep at it.
