Since it's debut for the 2008 model year Audi has consistantly been asked the question, "When will the world see the R8 race car?" A video of the all new Audi R8 LMS race car has officially surfaced. Allow your eyes and ears to be filled with pleasure you took a look at this new race car from championship winning motor company Audi.

Wait a sec. The Audi R8 LeMans came out several years ago. The production model was based off of it. In fact the Carrera GT's production run was cut short because Audi didn't want Porsche's car to be too competitive with it's own and chance losing.
I thought that everyone had already seen the R8 race series.

That post is wrong in so many ways.

The road going Audi R8 is completely different from the Le Mans Prototype Race Car. Shown here:

The Audi R8 road car only shares a common name with the LMP Race Car celebrating it's many victories at Le Mans. The Audi R8 Road Car is based off of the V10 Le Mans Quattro Concept:

The Le Mans Quattro is further developement of Audi's RSQ concept featured in the movie I, Robot.

The now production road car R8 is seeing it's own FIA GT3 homogulated racing version which is internally known as R16. Of course for various marketing reasons as well the public awareness of the vehicle as an R8 means they couldn't sell the vehicle as the R16. Pretty much the way the R14 will not be called R14, but A4 DTM instead since it is intended to be a race ready A4.

The Porsche Carrera GT, a road going V10 super car has nothing in common with any of those vehicles and never was homogulated for closed circuit racing by Porsche. Nor was it built on the R8 LMP chassis. It was intended from the start to be a limited production Porsche super car.

Audi has no control over Porsche, if anything Porsche could theoretically stop Audi as it owns majority share in Audi's parent company VW which in turn almost completely owns Audi (99.14%).

Uh no it's not wrong.

The Audi R8 LeMans had to have a mass production run in order to race as an LMP car. Thus the Audi R8 where the chassis and certain other components had to be identical. The Carrera GT fell under this same rule as well as the Pagani Zonda F and the Ford GT40.
Audi wanted a chance at having a car that would get lots of attention and as such got Porsche to agree to end their Carrera GT run. Since the Carrera GT was seen as comparable in ability it would have detracted from Audi's turn in the spotlight and decreased the sales profitability of the R8.
And it's not like the Carrera GT was gaining the same attention when it was racing. So Porsche capitulated.
All LMP cars must have a production run the same year they race. All GT cars must be based off of a production run vehicle and the GT number is based off of performance ability and engine makeup.

I also happened to look at the photos and that first car is not an LMP car. The Audi R8 LeMans is an LMP car. You might want to compare that photo to the final racer in Carbon. Since I have severe difficulty believing that EA would have screwed up in the artwork of such an already popular car.

Then, oh so greatness, explain the Zonda F.

Ya know what?
Considering that I build strictly custom jobs I really don't care who the hell is right or wrong. I don't have the desire to argue with someone who has been throwing about stats and (from what I can remember seeing) hasn't looked at any reviews considering cars.
I don't have the patience.

And finally, the LMP rules have changed wildly every year since it's inception and is being combined with the GT1 strain. And Audi does have a street version of the TDI. But it will not be introduced to America because it doesn't meet Californian or Federal Diesel regulations. It's strictly european. Which is usually where I get my info about european cars. From europe.
