I am still very skeptical about the ATI driver making a big performance difference and the patch hardly any, as concluded in the review, since it goes against all that we heard the past couple of weeks (ATI claiming and SMS confirming that the graphics coding in Shift was flawed and hence a performance increase could only come from patching the game and not from providing a new graphics driver).

Perhaps ATI found some driver optimizations for Shift, like they did with plenty of other games, but still the game needs fixing first. It's impossible to fix flawed coding in the game with a graphics driver.

Indeed. The drivers give 10-20% under certain conditions, which is the kind of thing we've come to expect from ATI/Nvidia. So ATI's initial statement still stands true.

Just to pull appart the HardOCP article a little more, there's a guy on nogripracing.com who with a Q9650 @ 4GHz and an ATI 5870 still sees the same crap frame rates on Tokyo Club as every other ATI user. Which kind of proves how bad Shift actually is!

So it's over the SMS to see if they can do the right thing. FIX THIS F***ING GAME ONCE AND FOR ALL

These apparently don't contain the optimizations from the HardOCP article.

Probably not but they work great for all the other games im playing waiting on this BS patch.

btw, I'm on a c2q 9550 @3.7 with a HD5850 and I still see the slowdowns in corners just like my old 4870.....so yeah this was definitely rushed out the door still in beta..

Just tried out the new drivers. Definitely an increase, but the framerates are still unplayable crap in traffic, merely slightly improved crap. Any day now on the patch and hopefully we can enjoy the game. Let's hope it's fixable because with frames as low as ATI users are getting, a 5 FPS increase is not going to cut it.

I did notice a very nice increase in AA quality, though.

I agree these are the best drivers to date, but ATI can only do so much, the day the patch is released is the day this game should have launched.....
I have no problem being a beta tester if I don't have to fork over $50 to do it...

Those beta drivers are actually the 9.12 that will be released soon after the patch in mid-December

Those together Patch+9.12 catalyst will do wonders for the performance

Seems to be nothing but good things on the horizon; patch release and expansion content announced for early December.

Over 2 months late but ATI users are finally getting added support. I really hope it's going to be worth the wait... I won't be happy unless we get a major performance increase; at least 2 times the current low FPS. Then again we may have to wait until mid-December for the new drivers to see perfection, if it's possible. Still, it would have been nice to get a hotfix or something rather than having to wait for them to fix everything else. Paying full price for a game and having to wait over 2 months to play it is pretty damn frustrating...

Incase anyone else missed it, the patch list has just been updated to say the official release date is December the 1st.

I bought a 4870 1Gb shortly before I bought Shift. I was experiencing the 'black screen' crashes when starting the test lap, or within 10 minutes max playing the game. (Same issue with COD MW2 also) After playing around with settings I found I could run the game at 1280x800 with high detail ok, but any higher and it crashed. After a lot of troubleshooting and trying workarounds from the forums with no success, I finally upgraded my case (had very cheap atx case) to a cooler master with four 120mm fans in it.

Now the game runs fine (grass in track/black sky/bouncing suspension occasionally) at @1650x1080 full detail with no slowdown, even with 15 cars on the track. I have had the framerate drop considerably once or twice midway through a race but restarting sorted it. I have only patch1 installed, no other workarounds in place, and only Sunmod and NoBling mods installed. I only have an average monitor so 1650 is the highest res I can choose.

I found the solution when I tried a pedestal fan blowing directly into the case with the side panel off and was able to run the game fine for over an hour. Checking in GPU-Z showed my 4870 was shutting down at 90Deg C. Now it runs at 81Deg max under full load o/c to 780/950

Specs:
Logitech Driving Force Pro
C2D E8500 @3.16
4Gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 @1033
XFX 4870 1Gb
Asus P5QSE/R
450W p/s (works fine surprisingly)
Win 7 x64
