If you’re returning to SimCity after a hiatus to play all of our updates or the new Cities of Tomorrow Expansion Pack, welcome back Mayors! There have been a ton of improvements to the game, new features, and free content added. We’ve upgraded servers, made improvements to traffic, added the raise and lower road tool, added six new regions and more free content such as the Houses of Worship. In the chance that you face issues getting started again, we want to help get you through it. Here’s a quick troubleshooting guide that will get you get in the game.

Note, during the update process, the SimCity Launcher may need to restart multiple times to fully update to the latest version of SimCity, this is expected behavior.

Tips
1. Run SimCity with Administrator permissions
We recommend running SimCity as Administrator on Windows machines. To do this perform the following steps:
Locate your SimCity installation, default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCity for 64-bit OS or C:\Program Files\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCity for 32-bit OS
Right click on the SimCity.exe file
Select “Run as administrator”

2. Graphics
If you are experiencing graphics performance issues, there are many settings to adjust to improve performance. Go to the Graphics tab in the Options > Settings menu. From there you can raise or lower your settings for everything from lighting to animation detail. You can also change from full screen to windowed mode from this screen.

It is also important to keep your graphics drivers up to date. Your graphics card manufacturer will have the latest drivers available. Here are links to NVIDIA (GeForce), AMD (Radeon) and Intel graphics card drivers.

Issues
1. Error that results in launcher restarting without updating:
If you are experiencing a WebKit error which results in your SimCity launcher restarting without updating you likely see the following errors:

Error Code: [4000] SimCity could not find the EA WebKit DLL. SimCity will now exit.
Error Code: [4001] The installed EA WebKit DLL has a different version from the one that SimCity expects. SimCity will now exit.

Please try the following steps to recover.

On a PC:
Copy all files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityUserData\Patches\UpdatedApp
Paste them into C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCity overwriting all files
Restart SimCity

On a Mac:
Locate where SimCity is installed on your machine.
Copy all files in \SimCity\SimCityUserData\Patches\UpdatedApp
Paste them into \SimCity\SimCity overwriting all files
Restart SimCity

2. SMCY Errors while updating
If you are having trouble updating and receive a SMCY error, you can review our list of SMCY error codes and fixes here: https://help.ea.com/article/simcity-reported-errors-smcy-1
If you are on a Mac and experience error code SMCY44, you likely ran out of disc space. Please free up some disc space and try reinstalling.

3. Checking for updates looping in the game launcher. [PC specific]
If you are in the game launcher and see "CHECKING FOR UPDATES" looping continuously you should delete all files in your User Data.
o If you have a desktop shortcut right click the icon and select PROPERTIES then delete all files in the User Data folder.
o If you launch through Origin go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityUserData and delete all files in the User Data folder.
Restart SimCity.

4. If you continue to experience issues after trying the steps above try these final steps.

On a PC:
  • Run SimCityRecovery.exe which on 64-bit OS machines is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityRecovery.exe or if you are running a 32-bit OS, C:\Program Files\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityRecovery.exe

  • Do a full re-install of SimCity by uninstalling SimCity from Control Panel>ADD/REMOVE Programs

o Be sure to check that no remaining files are left in the install location after uninstalling SimCity, if there are residual files, delete them manually.
o Re-install SimCity from Origin

On a Mac:
  • Uninstall SimCity

  • Reinstall SimCity
